Hopefully now you will see why we'll spend some time this year on Greek Mythology!!
What do you think? Will having some knowledge of Greek mythology enrich your reading experience? Does using mythology make the writing/story better? What about naming characters after mythological characters? Can you think of any?

I think that knowing about mythology will help in reading novels and stories. If you are reading along, and a reference to greek mythology is made, and you just see it as nothing, you will completely misunderstand what's going on. I do think that it makes reading better, because it provides an allusion to something that is universal. I know a couple Greek names. Pandora's box and Midas touch.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this chapter and its caused me to open my eyes more about being able to understand literature better. This will defiantly enrich my reading experience due to the fact that i can now see more than what's just written in text. It will definitely make reading a novel easier because once again i will be able to understand a little better of what's going on. I think it would be a bad idea to name characters after mythological characters due tot he fact that they are so popular, but i think it would be great to reference them like a mythological character. The characters I can think of are cyclopes, Phoenix, Typhon.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like this chapter as much because I haven't really read much Greek Mythology so I had a really hard time understanding and relating to some of the topics he discussed. I do think that knowing and understanding some Greek mythology would help your reading experience, because when you came across it you would be able to remember where it was from and be able to relate and understand that section of the book better. I guess using mythology would make the story better, because every extra thing helps add to the story and that would help some people relate better. I think naming characters after mythological creatures describes the character better, you know even before you start reading the book what the character is going to be like based on what characteristics their name signifies. The only name I can really think of is Ulysses (Ulysses S. Grant). Ulysses is the Latin word for the Greek Odysseus.
ReplyDeleteI like this chapter cuz greek mythology is a hobby of mine. i like to study and read about greek gods. greek mythology plays a big part in our culture because there are many references to the odessy and the illiad because you have the trojans and movies like poseidon. We also have the cliche of hercules and documentaries about greek mythology. I think knowing this stuff is good so if its alluded to we can know what the literature means. One character this brings to mind is Remus lupin from harry potter because he dies from a fight with his couter part.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that having knowledge of greek mythology will enhance and enrich one's reading experience. I think it does make reading better, by using greek mythological characters it gets the desired connotation that the writer wants felt by the reader. Like calling a female character a "siren" you instantly get the notion that this character is not a positive one. This character is being related to the ways of a siren where they have something that is desired, voice, looks, money, and lure in unsuspecting others, then affects the person in a negative way, physical, mental, emotional, anything.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do think that having at least some knowledge of Greek Mythology will enrich your reading experience. Especially in some stories where there are two men, fighting for the love of a woman...or an epic battle of sorts. I personally can get a little bit more interested in a story if I know there's a hint of Greek Mythology. I've never read The Odyssey, or The Iliad, but I have a feeling that I would be interested in them. Greek gods and mythology have been such a huge part in literature. Not just American literature, literature in general. I haven't personally read any stories that have had at least an obvious allusion to Greek Mythological characters, so I don't really know of any characters named after them. But, I do like the authors point about schools and teams being named The Spartans, or The Trojans. I never really deeply thought about that before.
ReplyDeleteI think that having a good understanding of Greek Mythology will help in understanding more novels and stories. Mythology references are used too much to not be familiar with them. It would help in your reading if you know at least some mythology. By putting mythology into stories, it will make more references to how or why the story was written. The only story that I can think of would be The Odyssey. They mention sirens, which are women in the ocean luring sailors to their death.
ReplyDeleteI was not a fan of this chapter. Like Kelsey said I am not real up to date on Greek Mythology. But at the same time i think that if i were to know more about Greek Mythology that i could understand a lot of literature better. It would have possibly helped me to understand this chapter. I can't really think of a book that uses a lot of the Greek Mythology.
ReplyDeleteI liked this chapter and it is my opinion that knowing more about Greek Mythology helps you to better understand what you are reading because it allows you to relate it to something else. Greek Mythology is often alluded to in many works of literature, so a decent knowledge of it would help you to better understand what you are reading, and why the character was named the way they were. One character that I think was named after a greek mythological character would be Hermione off of Harry Potter. Hermione is derived from the Messenger God Hermes.
ReplyDeleteI think that knowing more about Greek mythology will enrich your reading experience. Even if you don't know all that much about it, every little bit will help. If you know the names of some of the mythological characters, then you will start to notice characters in books that are named after them. You will also learn more about the character because of who they are named after. I really liked this chapter. I really enjoy learning about Greek mythology. I can't think of any characters named after mythological characters other than the actual mythological characters themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think that having knowledge about Greek mythology will help your reading experience. I dont know too much about Greek mythology but I bet it would be better to know it because it would help you understand somethings you wouldn't have before. Peter Pan was named after the Greek God Pan because Pan was a very good musician as well as Peter Pan.
ReplyDeleteYes, it will help you to know something about greek mythology because many stories talk about greek mythology and even use their gods and goddesses as names for characters. I think this makes the story better because it gives you more to think about when you read the story and helps you picture the character the way the author wants you to. When I think about Greek mythology I think of the movies Posedion because it was about the ocean and Poseidon is the god of the sea. Also it reminds me of sparta and the wars fought between spartans ad trojans.
ReplyDeleteI know quite a bit about Greek mythology, though I'm no expert. I enjoy things more that have the Greek mythology feel to it. I do know of a few books that have mythological names and gods like Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series. Artemis has a major appearance in all the books at one point or another, as well as Aphrodite, Zeus, Hermes, and many others.
ReplyDeleteI seriously love Greek and Roman mythologies in literature, it definitely makes the read more interesting.
I think that greek mythology can help when reading, ive noticed now while reading i pick up on things mentioned in this book such as allusions and all to often there are some from greek mythology. WHile knowing what the author is saying is very helpful, not everyone understands. Naming after mythological things is probably going to be a huge symbol.
