Chapter 8

I love fairy tales! And how cool is it that he mentions Paducah?!

So, can you think of any stories you've read that remind you of fairy tales? Anything with an evil stepparent? A "prince" who rescues a fair maiden? A jealous "queen"? I can't help but be reminded of Harry Potter. He has horrible stepparents and although a handsome prince doesn't come to his rescue--a big, hairy semi-wizard does. (Think back to the first novel when Hagrid appears.) I also think about how when he's at school, it's like Cinderella at the ball--all of the magic works. At midnight/summer break, it's back to his normal, dreary life.

Your turn. Think of a short story, novel, TV show, or movie that reminds you in some way of a fairy tale. Explain why.

  1. Okay, once again I am going to relate something to "A Prayer for Owen Meany." The Hester's situation sort of reminds me of the evil stepmother and stepsisters (in this case brothers) in "Cinderella." No matter what Hester does her family never likes her and even though they are her real family and not step-family, i still think of Cinderella and how no matter how hard she tried she was never good enough for them. Hester just wanted to be treated equally to her brothers but never was so she found a way to run away from it all by going to college just as Cinderella found her prince and ran away with him (college to Hester was like the prince to Cinderella). Also any love story, whether book or movie, could related to fairy tales. They are all the same, they all have girls who finally meet their prince and are swept off their feet and everything ends happily ever after.

  2. Just like Kelsey, I'm also going to relate this to A Prayer for Owen Meany. Hester and Owen have a lot in common in this sense. Although Owen does not have evil stepparents, his mother never even speaks to him, which is just as damaging. His father is completely oblivious to everything that Owen does. His "prince" is Vietnam basically. It saves him from his life in Gravesend that he hates. And, the book doesn't end very happily for Owen, but he saves a lot of little kids. The ending may not be what we consider happy but Owen knew he was going to die and accepted it.

  3. My favorite types of books are fantasy books which all revolve around fairy tales. My favorite book when i was little was the hobbit which takes you into the land of ogres, elves, centaurs, and of course hobbits. all the creates get there base from some sort of fairy tale or old myth dating way back. It's all in a land of magic mystic creatures and thus adventure which is the basis for a fairy tale. Good beats evil and everyone has a good day.

  4. A movie that reminds me of a fairy tale would be the movie Shrek.Shrek reminds me of a fairy tale due to the fact that when shreks woman kissed a frog and he turn s into a prince. It also also reminds me of a fairy tale because at the end when they get married they turn into humans. The main reason this reminds me of a fairy tale is due to the fact that once they get married, they end up living happily ever after!

  5. When thinking about fairy tales, the book My Sister's Keeper comes to mind. The book is basically about a girl that sues her parents for Medical Emancipation. She does this because her sister is dying from a rare leukemia and the parents only created her to save the life of the sick daughter. In a way, this reminds me of "Cinderella." Mostly because it is the situation of child vs parent, or step-parents. Also, it reminds me of "Cinderella" because the sick daughter gets a chance to go to a "Prom" for all the kids in the hospital. This would be in reference to the ball that Cinderella goes to with Prince Charming, because the boy she went with was like her Prince Charming.

  6. A movie that reminds me of a fairy tale is the movie "Field of Dreams". What happens in the movie is nothing short of unbelievable. The movie is about a man who is a young husband, father, and farmer. He has enough financial worries as it is, but he hears a voice in the corn field. The voice tells him that famous phrase "If you build it, they will come". He then has a vision of his corn field turning into a baseball field. So he does it. After he builds the field, Shoeless Jo Jackson, MEL Ott, all of these amazing baseball players from the past and died long ago show up on his field and start playing baseball. What the whole point of the field was turned out to be about his father. His father and him had had a falling out when his dad wanted to play catch with him and said something horrible when he was in High School, and he moved out to college. His father died before he could apologize. His father comes back at the end, and his father is the young self he was when he played, and they have the catch that they never did. Its a fairy tale story to me, because you can't go out to a corn field, plow it under, make it into a baseball field, and have shoeless joe jackson catching fly balls on it.

  7. I read this book called "Everlost" last year. It was definatley one of my favorite books. It's about a boy and a girl that are in a car wreck, and they die. But, their souls are trapped in this world, Everlost, where a lot of other souls are too. Anyway, there is this woman there that is supposed to be helping everyone there but in the end it just turns out she was hurting them all for selfish reasons. It kind of reminds me of Hansel and Grettle. You've got two kids, a boy and a girl(Hansel and Grettle), that were on their way to a wedding but died and got trapped in this world. Then the woman says she's "helping" them, but in the end ends up hurting them all (the witch).
This is the best example that I could think of. I would love to see that book end up as a fairytale.

  8. The fairy tale that came to mind was Shrek. Based on fantasy characters, a princess is locked away and an ogre comes to rescue her, but she's disappointed he's not prince charming. She's turned into an ugly ogre herself and Shrek ends up sweeping her off her feet in the end.

  9. The fairy tale that comes to mind would be my childhood favorite; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This movie is based on fantasy, the princess snow white is poisoned and can't be woke up without her true loves kiss. In the end the prince comes and kisses snow white then they get married and live happy ever after.

  10. One movie that reminds me of a fairy tale would be The Princess Diaries. The movie is about a high school girl that isn't very popular who finds out that she is a real princess. In one of the movies (I can't remember if it's the first or second one) she finds her "Prince Charming," just like in Cinderella. The fact that the girl in the movie finds out she is a princess after like 18 years is only something that would happen in a fairy tale.

  11. A work of literature that reminds me of a fairy tale is A Prayer for Owen Meany. The new school headmaster would be like the evil stepmother or the villain. The vietnamese kids would be the people that needed rescuing. Owen would be the hero along with help from his sidekick Johnny. Pastor Merril would be the one thats jealous, of Owen's level of faith and how he believes he was chosen by god.

  12. There are alot of stories that remind me of fairy tales. The one the comes to mind is Shrek because Shrek is basically a prince and he kisses his princess and she becomes an ogre too and they fall in love and live happily ever after. But Shrek fights off the evil king in the typical fairy tale of good vs. evil.

  13. Stories that remind me of fairytales are everywhere but the main one I can think of is Shrek. Shrek is an ugly ogre who goes on an adventure or quest and has a sidekick (donkey) who asssists him on his journey. He succeeds in his quest finally at the end and stops the evil kin (villain) from marrying the girl he loves, who happens to be an ogre too. In this story good wins and so does love.

  14. Let's see. In the current book I'm reading actually, there is a bit of fairytale to it. It is not quite to a T to a fairytale, but it has the elements of fairytales. Tamora Pierce's The Song of the Lioness Quartet has the twins Thom and Alanna. Alanna wants to be a knight, but thats for boys, and Thom wants to be a sorcerer, not a knight. They trade places to Alanna can become a Knight and Thom a sorcerer. Alanna disguises herself has a boy for the 6 or so years it takes her to become a Knight. She enemy through most of the books is her Prince's evil Uncle Roger of Conte`. She fights against his magic over the years making sure Roger can't take the crown from Prince Jonathan.

Overall it has the elements of evil step-relatives, magic, gods and goddesses, so I'd definitelt say it has a touch of fairytale.
