Wow--so the sonnet is the only poetic form we need to know? I wish he were the one writing the AP exam! However, I have to agree to a certain extent, it is probably the most common type of poem we study.Other than his explanantion of the types of sonnets and his remarks that Shakespearean sonnets are divided into 2 parts (the first two quatrains and the final quatrain/couplet)--with which I totally disagree--I thought he made a lot of sense. Before you try to pick apart a poem, you should read just to get the point, the enjoyment. (I know--many of you don't enjoy them!)Also, there can be quite a bit of meaning in only fourteen lines. I loved how he mentioned that short poems must take far more time to write than longer ones, because everything has to be perfect. How true that must be.
OK, so for your response--tell me what you thought about the sonnet included in this chapter or what you thought about Foster's (the author) explanation for what's important in poetry. Your response should be 50 words. (EXACTLY)

I liked the poem in this chapter. I liked it because to me like it told a deep story of two people meeting. They later fall in love and then are later separated somehow, either by death or a break-up. I really enjoyed reading this poem.
ReplyDeleteI did not like the sonnet at all in the chapter of this book. Although it was deep, it was depressing. Along with that, it seemed sappy and dull. Foster explained it well though about what was important, and he pointed out things I did not catch the first time.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about the sonnet in this chapter. It was beautiful, and kind of depressing at the same time. The lovers were so...in love...and that was the beautiful part, but in the end you kind of knew they didn't end up together which was depressing. My opinion on Foster's explanation on poetry was also mixed. I like the way he explained it, it was pretty clear. He also helped me catch some things in the poem that i didn't catch the first time. Well, you know kind of helped me understand it better anyway.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like the sonnet in this chapter it was depressing and sad. If they were soo in love then why did they not end up together? I like girly romantic endings and as you can imagine this made me very depressed and sad. I did like the way that Foster explained it. It really helped me in understanding the sonnet better than the first time I read it.
ReplyDeleteI did not like the sonnet in this chapter. It was sad and depressing. The way it ended was the saddest part of it. I think that Foster explained the chapter and poem well. He was able to point out all the details and made it easier for me to understand.
ReplyDeleteI thought the sonnet in this chapter was a good representation. It to me was an in-depth metaphor about peoples lives and how their relationships connect and then the ripple in the pond shows turbulence in their connection which is like fighting in the relationship and sometimes breaks people apart.
ReplyDeleteI did not like the sonnet in this chapter. The people in the sonnet were in love but they didn't end up together. Foster did explain the sonnet very well. I also took note of when the author said that people should read a poem "without a care in the world." Usually when I have to read a poem, I dread it, but this made me realize that I should read the poem without having a preconceived notion about it.
ReplyDeleteim not a big fan of the sonnet in this chapter. and my main reason being that if they were so in love why are they not together. If there was at least some explanation of this i would have enjoyed it at least five times more than i did.
ReplyDeleteI did not like the sonnet in chapter four because the two were in love but they couldn't be together. I really liked where the author said you shouldn't judge a poem before you read it because that is what I do and because of that I usually dread reading them.
ReplyDeleteI liked the sonnet in this because of its great illustration of people and love. It's easy to get that this poem is about two lovers who are having issues with their feelings towards one another. Afther you read the poem again, you start to see the underlying meanings of the words. The poem is about two lovers, both on the edge of being togeather and happy. When they are apart, their feelings towards one another are of love and compassion. But when they are togeather their feelings change. The poem illustrates this in the line "A sudden ripple made their faces flow". This is to picture the two lovers coming close, right on the verge of a possible kiss, then the feelings overwhelm the lovers and a ripple happens between them, like a rock thrown into a calm body of water.
ReplyDeleteI disliked this poem even more so than most poems i have encountered. For basically the whole poem the author describes how much the lovers are in love then without an explanation the lovers part. Poems, such as this, where authors give too much room for interpretation make me mad.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author, who made some valid points about poetry. I can see now how the form plays a part in the poem. I liked the sonnet, because the poet really was able to show emotion and the love between the two of them in only two sentences.
ReplyDeleteI liked the way this poem was written, like the way the author gave such vivid details that you could almost see the image of this. I also liked how I could really get into this poem, because it seemed like this could be related to situation today (a couple wanting to be together so bad, but never could) which really made it easy to read and interpret. But I was disappointed that the two people couldn't be together. How they had to just sit there and wish to be together but never got to. As for the sonnet itself, I totally agree with what Thomas Foster said about it being, "A short poem that takes way more time than a long one." These poems definitely seem like they would take a long time, especially if you were making it where the first eight lines related and the last six related. I really like this form of poetry.
ReplyDeleteI like the way sonnets are set up, and this chapter is very informative in how they work and the fact that it see the most common we usually see. I enjoy writing poetry myself, so learning more bout different kinds of poems makes it easier for me to come up with my own poetry.
