Chapter 13

I have to agree that many of the things we read are political in one sense or another. Think back to just this week--the portion from Toni Morrison's book Sula--that was definitley political. Although the story was simply about a woman on a train, it said much more than that.

We are going to read a play soon called The Importance of Being Earnest. It is a comedy, and I think you guys will really like it, but it is very political. It is what's called a satire. That's when a writer uses comedy/humor to make a more serious point. Think Saturday Night Live--many of the great skits (especailly the political ones) are really meant to send a more serious message.

Why do you think writers disguise their points in fiction? Why not just write an essay about what they really think?

  1. I think the reason why writers disguise their opinions and thought in fiction to get people to read it. I mean come on, who wants to read a work that all it says is "I think this" or "I Think That". I know I wouldn't want to read someone else's opinions for 400 pages. But if these opinions are used in a funny story line that illustrates the authors point is much more entertaining and enjoyable. If the story is a more serious one, the addition of characters and plot lines keep the story interesting to read.

  2. i think that writes discuss their opinions because they like to write things that they may be passionate about. They might also want to help their passionate readers learn a little bit ore about them. No one would ever read a book that talked about their opinions on a subject for 300 pages or so. They would never sell any books and once someone had read a book like that, they would never read another book by them again.

  3. I think people disguise their points about serious topics is so people will find it more interesting. Lets be honest, it gets old reading serious essays about important topics all the time. When a writer uses satire and puts excitement in his works then we actually want to read it. Thats why I love ESPN. They have shows like Around the Horn, and Pardon the Interruption that add even more excitement to serious topics and sports news. If a writer just wrote about something serious with no excitement, no one would read it

  4. I think that writers disguise their opinions because they want to be better writers. Authors that just put their opinions out there, unless they are a political official or something, aren't going to get the money or ratings that they want. Most people wouldn't buy books that are, from beginning to end, opinions by someone else. Everyone is etitled to an opinion, but it shouldn't be point blank. Encorporating what you think into an enjoyable and funny skit, or something, would be a better way to get the point across, than just publishing them in a book, or writing an essay.

  5. There are times when politics are boring or just hard to understand so authors use satire and literature to get there point across but it's interesting and people wanna read it. IM a political cartoon person i think there funny if you know whats going on in society but there are other works which sends out politics to a wider crowd of people to enjoy and it opens the political world more.

  6. I think that writers disguise their points because for starters it would be extremely boring, and politics alone are boring. But another big reason is that a lot of people feel very strongly about their politics. And if the writer comes out in the title and says their view, anyone with an opposing view would not want to read it. But, writers accomplished this by putting their ideas into funny stories. This is a much better idea than just saying what you think.

  7. I think that writers disguise their opinions in fiction so people will actually read it. Especially in politics. Everything in politics is so touchy. Unless you're a hardcore politician you have to basically walk on eggshells with the things you say about politics. Everyone has a different opinion which makes it hard to please anyone with your own. But, if you can find a clever way to disguise it in a fiction story, it makes it a lot less "in your face"...which makes people more open to reading it.

  8. I think that writers try to disguise their points so that their works will be more interesting. I wouldn't want to read a book that was about what the author thought about our culture today. I would want the author to tell his or her opinion through an entertaining story with the use of different characters. No one is going to want to read a book or boring where the author tells their opinion the whole time. But if the author disguises their opinion and adds a story line to it, many more people will read their books.

  9. I think that if an author can express what they want through fiction then they can reach a much bigger audience, even if the people do not agree with what they mean they can still be hooked on what they are reading. There are a lot of things that I read or watch on tv and they may not be something I agree with but there is something else that makes me enjoy watching it or reading it. Like the today show (haha) I like when they show the food, clothing and music stuff but when they start talking about whats going on in the world but its a byassed side I don't watch it.

  10. I think an author disguises their views in fiction because who on earth would want to read a serious essay saying what one person thinks? That would be really boring but disguising it in fiction at least gets the point across and it makes it better to read.

  11. I think writers disguise their views, for probably different reasons. Maybe because they don’t want to offend anyone. If it’s fiction, no one can assume that’s the author’s real opinion on the matter. Also, a fiction can make the story more interesting. It’s possible, they just want to interest the reader more, by involving more than just their point of views and involve things that didn’t really occur and false assumptions or ideas.

  12. Writing an essay on political things isn't really a good way to get people to read it. Sure, there will be some people who will, those who are deep into the political stuff already. But if you give politics something interesting to read about, you'll have more readers.

If you take a good fictional idea, something that a lot of people would read, and hide a political problem deep within it, you can get points and views out to people in a way that is appealing.

  13. i have to agree with jake and saying that i think writers discuss their views in more enjoyable ways, because when they write a book their intentions are to sell that book for others to read. but who wants to read a book all about what one person thinks and why. That to me sounds more like a homework page. Authors discuss their views in more fictional ways to keep the reader interested and still get their point across,

  14. The reason why writers use disguises is because there are few people in the world that are going to want to read something entirely political. But if someone can put the same point in a fiction novel more people will read it for entertainment and he can get his message to a lot more people.
