Chapter 26

On the last page of this chapter, Foster states that "irony doesn't work for everyone." What does he mean by that? Why doesn't it? What does he mean by multivocal and univocal?

  1. Not everyone "Gets It". Irony is something that happens that is the exact opposite of what does happen, or is said. I know people who have no concept of irony, or sarcasm for that matter. Some people just think on the literal level at all times, and they are the ones who cannot get the irony in a story, or in life.

  2. He means that not everyone understand this concept. It is too bad for them though. Irony is great I think. I agree with Jake here too, I know a lot of people that cannot understand sarcasm or irony. I am sarcastic a lot and I think it is so frustrating when people don't get it.

  3. I think he means that some people don't always get the irony. They look at it literally. It's like when someone says something serious but is being very sarcastic and other person takes it as a literal insult. It's the same thing in literature. I sometimes have a really hard time understanding and making the connection with irony. By multivocal the author is meaning to look at something from many viewpoints, univocal is to just look at it from one viewpoint.

  4. Not everyone gets irony because some just don't understand the tones that makes it irony. Some see things as the bare of it, and reversing it using irony(as the opposite of what you expected) they don't quite absorb why it turns out that way.

  5. When he says that irony doesn't work for everyone he's saying that a lot of people don't understand irony. They simply just don't get it. Multivocal just means that you look at the irony in a lot of different ways. Univocal, I'm guessing, means that you look at irony in just one way, you're not trying to really look into it.

  6. Not everyone is able to understand irony. Some people can't grasp the tone or concept that the irony is trying to make. Multivocal could mean that you take different views on a concept, while univocal could mean that you only take one view on a concept.

  7. There are times when small minded people may not see the big picture and understand why there was irony and they were just reading a book and not inferring other components of what has happend. Multivocal is being able to look at something from many different angles and univocal is someone that is single minded and can't look outside the box.

  8. When the author says that "irony doesn't work for everyone" he means that not everyone understands the concept of irony. Some people can't pick out the irony in a book and they still don't understand it when it is pointed out to them. Some people just take things to literally. Multivocal means to look at something in more than just one way. Univocal means to look at something in just one way.

  9. The author is trying to say that many people do not understand the concept of irony because they view everything is literal. Many readers look over irony and sarcasm in stories because they aren't strong enough in reading to recognize it. Univocal means to only see things one way, multi-vocal is to see things from different viewpoints and in many ways.

  10. I think the author is trying to say that not everyone sees things as what they are supposed to be. I am one who doesn't catch on to irony as it happens but that does not mean that I am "small minded" and when people are sarcastic all the time it gets frustrating because there is no need in being sarcastic all the time in every conversation. I also think that people who are "big minded" do not always get things as soon as it happens!

  11. I think the author is getting at is that not everybody can pick up on irony and they take everything literal and dont pick up on connections. Multivocal means that you look at something more than one way and univocal means you look at something one dimensionally.

  12. What I think the author means by “irony isn’t for everyone” is that not everyone really sees what’s being ironic. Some people just look too much into things and are too literal to quite get something in a story. I think multi-vocal means looking at something from many different views and univocal means by just one.

  13. Everyone that usually reads irony does not either understand it or know what it means. if they do not understand the concept of what the irony is trying to portray then they will not be able to understand what the author was trying to convey. multivocal mans it can have several different meanings while univocal means it has only one meaning or no meaning at all.
