Ok, this one is a free write. We haven't really read enough yet, so there hasn't been a story where someone gets wet or drowns.
Just comment on the chapter. What did you think? Do you think reading this book and hearing about things like the symbolic meanings of drowning and submersion will change the way you read?

Drowning can be a strange and frightening thing. When used as symbolism it can signify sometime maybe a sign like rebirth, in the cases where the drowned survived.
ReplyDeleteIn Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness Quartet there is a time where she falls through the ice of a pond, trapped and drowning beneath the ice. It was as if it was meant to happen to get her over the fears of drowning.
I think that using drowning is not always meant to be in water. When a charecter drowns, they fall into a body of something with a feeling of liquid, not solid, that cannot be used to get out. It is being surrounded by a force that you have no ability to fight. Being rescued is the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. I think that characters, and people for that matter, drown all the time. People drown in addictions, jobs, debts, consciousness. Drowning can occur physically, mentally, spiritually, or emotionally.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this chapter i do believe any water mentioned in a story will deserve a closer look from me. Because the drowning or not drowning can mean a lot of different things. I thought the rebirth was cool because if you come close to dying you will probably be a changed person and a baptism is the same way.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this chapter, it does seem to me like drowning had a way deeper meaning than just what you normally think of as an accidental drowning. In the novel deception point, a character suspiciously drowned when he found a scientific finding first. this to me showed that it was way more than just a drowning and that it was obviously done intentionally with a deep meaning. from now on, whenever a drowning occurs, i will defiantly be sure to take a deeper look into it.
ReplyDeleteI liked this chapter. I had never thought about drowning and submersion being symbolic for something else. I definitely think that when someone goes underwater, it could really mean that they are being “reborn.” From now on when I read, I will definitely pay attention to when people go under the water and try to find the underlying meaning of it. I can’t really think of a story where someone drowns, but looking at the examples in this books shows that there must be a lot out there.
ReplyDeleteI liked this chapter. It changed the way I looked at drowning in a novel. I never even made the correlation of Baptism and drowning. I really liked the example the author gave of the girl walking into a pond and the Dr. saving her and how this related to being "reborn," because afterwards the doctor wrapped her in a blanket, just like they do newborn babies. It's really interesting how the author looks into books so much, I wish I could interpret symbolism in books, the only time I realize it is when it's totally obvious. I thought it was very interesting how he interpreted the novel where the protagonist got into water three times to correlate to baptism. I'm going to remember this chapter when I'm reading a book that has scenes that deal with drowning or water in general.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this chapter it made me confused though. I didn't ever think that drowning and baptism could be inthe same category so I'm definately going to have to pay more attention to books I read for these things.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this chapeter and it showed me a new view point about drowning and water. I agree with Miranda that I would never have used drowning and baptism in the same sentence but this book has opened that horizon for me to explore and understand deeper meanings of things.
ReplyDeleteI liked this chapter because it showed me yet another way that something can be interpreted in a different way than expected. Ok i lied, i'm getting kind of tired of EVERYTHING having a different meaning or an underlying meaning different than expected. But i do see how drowning can be related to baptism. After being baptized you feel cleaned and brand new. So water and drowning definitely have alot of meanings.
ReplyDeleteI think drowning doesn't have to mean drowning in water, necessarily. I've seen drowning be used in some stories in ways such as "drowning in lies," or "drowning in your fears." Also, drowning could be interpreted as recreating something, cleansing, etc. I really enjoyed this chapter, it made me realize things in another way.
ReplyDeletei liked this chapter. Like miranda it confused me as well. I would have never thought of drowning and baptism as the same thing. Drowning in my opinion is a bad thing and baptism is supposed to be a happy moment in your life. I will most definatly have to pay more attention to water and "drowning" in books
ReplyDeletethere is always something symbolic in almost any event there in the story. no matter how insignificant it may seem there is still a reason the author put the detail in there. so im sure that there is some symbolic reason for drowning or somthing like it.
ReplyDeletei i think that drowning really can a lot of symbolic eaning after reading this chapter. it can be used in so many ways i hae never thought of, like rebirth of a character. there are many others too that if i look i could probably find them.
