OK, so get ready, we will be reading "The Rocking Horse Winner"!
I think times have changed quite a bit from the early nineteen hundreds. there are no more twin beds and no more trains and tunnels. If an author or a movie director want to create a sex scene today, they pretty much just do it.What do you think about that? Are those kinds of scenes best left to the imagination (curtains blowing, waves crashing...) Were TV and movies better off when the characters had twin beds? Didn't that force the viewer/reader to use his/her imagination? Didn't we have to put more thought into what we were watching/reading? Are we better off now--when there is no way you could read most novels at the breakfast table with the whole family? What do you think?

I definitely think that those scenes are best to be left to the imagination, sometimes authors and movie directors get a little to vivid and open with their sex scenes. I think movies were better off when they were more restrictive about what they showed and what they left to the imagination. I think it's okay to have characters sleeping in the same beds and other little stuff, but sometimes the directors details and descriptions get a little to vivid. When you watched shows that were more restricted you did have to think a little more, that's what makes movies interesting. I don't think we're better off, there aren't enough movies that families can watch together anymore.
ReplyDeleteI think that the more that is left to the imagination, the more fun something is. When we imagine things, its always way more cooler, not just with sex. For instance, if you read "The Giver" then you know about the ending and it is really left up to your imagination. Did he escape with his brother and make it to safety? or did they freeze to death and not make it which made everyone get their memories that were taken for them. And also as Kelsey says, watching a movie with your family where two people get intimate is not kinda weird, its CREEPY. So yeah, sometimes it is best left to the imagination.
ReplyDeleteI believe those kind of scenes should be left to imagination. Same with tv and movies. Some stories it could be appropriate, but most it's not. I'd rather be able to read a book that I feel comfortable reading while at the table with my family. Sometimes novelists, directors, etc get really carried away with their sex scenes, or other scenes, and forget about the readers and take away their capability of just using their imagination.
ReplyDeleteI suppose I'm a little indifferent to this subject. Yes, its true there are many books that can't be read among a family because of many things like that, its true. But I still think that many times it enhances the story well whether there is detail or just the bare bones of what happens between people like that. Really, I think it wouldn't be a problem if people weren't so sensitive to the idea of younger people being exposed to 'sex' it IS, after all, a part of life that almost everyone will know eventually.
ReplyDeleteI think that things like that are better left up to the imagination. I personally don't care to hear or see what anyone does behind closed doors. It is awkward for me to be watching a show with the family and something like that come on. I think that "sex" is advertised to much and is a bad influence on the younger generation. I think that is fine for some scenes for the higher rated movies, but for normal tv and novels i think that it would be best left up to the imagination
ReplyDeleteI think that sex scenes are better off if left to your imagination. Its really awkward for me to watch a movie that has sex scenes in them with my parents. Yes I agree that sometimes its better to describe it or show it but for the majority its better just to leave it up to the viewer/reader.
ReplyDeleteI do think that these scenes are best left to the imagination. It makes you think more. If a movie or book told you every little thing that happened, there’s nothing left for you to figure out on your own. I like movies and books where you have to think about what actually happened...and not just with sex. I don’t necessarily think we are better off than when characters had twin beds. When I was little, I always thought that was weird because no couples that I knew slept in separate beds. I do think that a lot of movies have reached a point where it’s kind of awkward to watch them with your parents. I personally don’t want to watch a sex scene in a movie with my parents.
ReplyDeleteI think that the imagination is generally better than what someone else would put into a book or movie. I think that the single bed is ok though because its more realistic, just the describing of the sex is a little unnecessary. and the author could feel it awkward while writing about it and not get the point that they want to across.
ReplyDeletei definatly think that those situations are better if left to decide by the imagination. i do believe that the more subtle movies were better for our society, because if you look how much we've changed over the last several year due to media, there has to be something that is corrupting us, and i believe movies have something to do with it. Now days you don't really have to use ur imagination in reading, its described in so much detail that its no longer necessary. I think in todays society, its not as easy to read a book as a family due to the fact that they are not as holism as they used to be.
ReplyDeleteI believe that those situations are better left to decide by the imagination, too. I find it very awkward when reading a book with it in there. I think that with sex scenes in books its gives you more of an image in you mind and I think that is really bad for 16 and 17 year old kids and I think it can be a bit inappropriate even if the author thinks we are going through this we still don't need more influencial things trying to get us to do them.
ReplyDeleteI think that those scenes are also best left to the imagination. But, on the other hand, we dont live in the 1900's anymore and things have changed. I think that there should be a happy medium here. They should not show every little detail by any means, but it is totally not reality to make a movie or book to be like the 1950's.
ReplyDeleteI definately think that those scenes are better left to the imagination. There is an extremely fine line between something overexposed and something tasteful. You know when you watch a movie if they're making a sex scene tastefully, you still know what they're doing...you don't need to actually see them doing it to know. But, this isn't back in "I Love Lucy" days. Married people sleep in the same bed, that doesn't always have to be sexual...I think its fine to show a married couple sleeping together (literally sleeping). I think putting sex into novels is okay for a certain age group...but it is a little ridiculous when every single book nowadays has to have at least a little something sexual in it.
ReplyDeleteI think that times have changed but i like books that don't describe everything in detail and let you use your imagination to fill in the blanks. I believe they should just hint at the sex scenes and leave you to interpret what happened. I believe that you enjoy a story more when it makes you think more. Especially if a less than mature audience is reading or being read the book.
ReplyDeletei think we are a lot wore off now then we were before. it is hard to try to read or watch movies with your family when every other scene portrays violence, sex, drugs, and everything that is wrong with this world. it is so sad that this world has gone so downhill. when you can't turn on the t.v. without seeing something that makes you cringe then there needs to be a change.
