OK, so why are we humans so fascinated with flight? Have you ever wished you could fly? Why? What would it mean if we could?
Can you name any books/stories you've read where a character flies? (Literally or figuratively?) I've read a couple of novels by James Patterson in which a doctor has figured out how to create children who will be born part-human and part-bird. While the children love the ability to fly, their situation is much like the one mentioned in the book--the ability to fly is what traps them. The whole world wants to study them, see them, put them on display. The ability prevents their freedom instead of giving it to them.

I think that the reason why we are so obsessed with flight is because we are not born with the ability to do it. We have always been envious of the ability to fly away from our troubles. Now that we have airplanes, we to can fly, but it is not the same as having a pair of wings and flying away any time we choose. I think it would be awesome to be able to fly. I mean think about it, if you could fly, you would seriously be able to go wherever you wanted anytime you wanted.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason we're so fascinated by flight is because it provides so much freedom. We think that if we could fly that we could escape all our troubles when ever we wanted. Flight is totally a symbol of freedom. We can fly in airplanes, but that's not as free as being able to have wings and go where ever and when ever. I guess it would be really cool if I could fly because I could go where ever i wanted (different countries and other places like that). Whenever I read this chapter I instantly thought of the poem we read in class about the boy and his car. How he thought that his car was his ultimate freedom, he could go anywhere at anytime and just get away from his normal life, just like the ability of flight would provide us.
ReplyDeleteI think humans are fascinated with flight because it's something different, something we don't get to encounter on a normal basis and I believe it really does give a sense of freedom, in a way. I'm sure everyone has wished they could fly, because of the freedom it does provide. It would be so much easier to just fly than any other form of transportation, and with flying, sky isn't the limit. I can't think of any stories with flying, really. But normally, flying in stories symbolizes freedom.
ReplyDeleteI've read the Maximum Ride books by James Patterson, as well as the original idea he got those books from When the Wind Blows and The Lake House. Actually, in a book I just got done reading called Agents of Artifice by Ari Marmell the main character has the ability to fly, though it's extremely tiring for him to do so.
ReplyDeleteFlight is much sought after because there are only so many forms of life that can fly naturally. Humans were never meant to fly of their own capacity, and that is probably why there are so many people who write of flying freely with nothing but themselves to keep them aloft. Like the only Legend about a man and his son who escaped prison by making wings of wax and feathers, but his son took too much advantage of his freedom flight and flew too close to the sun. The wax melted and he fell to his death.
i think that the reason everybody is so interested in flying is because it kind of gives you a sense of freedom, so your not tied down into realty. The story to me that comes to mind is peter pan. Where they are trapped in the real world, but with a little fairy dust they can fly away to never-never land and not have to worry about all of their problems.
ReplyDeleteI thnk the reason why people love flight so much is because it is something that humans dont have naturally. I agree with Jake completely that humans are envioius of the ability to fly. I think of Harry Potter where they use their brooms to fly around and gives them a sense of comfort and freedom.
ReplyDeleteI think we are all so fascinated with flight because we have never experienced it ourselves. Sure we can get in an airplane or helicopter but that’s not the same. We aren’t fascinated with walking because we experience that every day. I wish I could fly. If we had that ability, we would have endless possibilities. We could travel wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted. The only story I can think of where a character flies is Peter Pan. I know that is a childish example, but it makes a good point. Peter Pan uses his ability to fly to go to Neverland, a place where you never grow up. He uses his ability to escape something he doesn’t want to face.
ReplyDeleteWell the reason that everyone is so fascinated with it is because its impossible and a really cool idea. We envy things that can fly. Flying represents freedom something a lot of people on this earth don't have. I have always wanted to be able to fly mainly for the freedom aspect and when i was younger i liked exploring and honestly everything gets boring at ground level after awhile. If we could fly depending on how fast we could travel would be reinvented along with all or most homes and buildings. On second thought it would change almost every aspect of life.
ReplyDeleteI think that us humans are fascinated with flight due to the fact that we were not born with the ablility to do it. I've always wondered what it would be like to be able to fly to one place and not have to worry about traffic or any other road obstacles. I think if we had the ability to fly we would be able to go wherever we want when we wanted with not many obstacles standing in our way.
ReplyDeleteIt think the reason why we all want to be able to fly is because we don't have the ability to. If we could fly there would be no worries. We could probably accomplish more and not have anything blocking us.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with everyone else here, I think we can fly because its something we can't do. We are not fascinated with running or walking and not really with an other kind of transportation. I am no different than anyone else, I think it would be amazing if we could fly. Im sure that after a while it would get old, but for a while, it would amaze everyone. I cannot think of any books where anyone flys except ones that have already been named. Flying symbolizes freedom and the ability to escape what is around you.
ReplyDeleteI too am agreeing with everyone else...we want to fly because we can't. Just like if you have curly hair, you want straight hair and vice versa. I personally would love to be able to fly, even if it was just one time, it would be absolutely amazing to have that kind of freedom. The only books that I can think of with flying are books that people have already named like Harry Potter. Even though the people themselves can't fly things like brooms and cars can fly which makes it fascinating still.
ReplyDeletewell i just typed this already but apparently it didn't work. I believe humans are so obsessed with the aspect of flight because they do not possess it and are envious. Birds and other creatures with the ability are viewed as being free and having no responsibilities by us and we want that. I have always wanted to fly so i would be able to go anywhere i want whenever i wanted without having to deal with other drivers or people. Also the freedom and view of everything would be nice as well.
